As the coronavirus spread, schools were closed and faced enormous challenges to keep teaching going. In addition to the challenge of having to replace frontal teaching, the daily life of the students in the classes also suffered from this situation. They needed an application that simulates the daily live in the classrooms as good as possible.
There are two main groups that have different requirements for the functionality of a learning management system. The teachers need to be able to speak to the students, work through the lesson materials and make documents available. The students on the other side need some functionality where they can organize the provided digital materials in relation to the subject. However, it should not be neglected that the students also have an opportunity to communicate with friends and classmates.
The usability is a main decision criteria when it comes to applications. For a learning management systems the design has to appeal to both target groups (students and teachers). It needs to be accessible, easy to learn and visually appealing so that users want to use the application. Besides plenty of whitespace and one primary system color there are different colors for each subject to better separate them visually from one another. One special characteristic is the fact that hora (for now) is designed for tablet use only. This decision was made on the background that on the one hand a tablet can be operated with pencil-like tools and/or keyboards, which makes them very versatile and on the other hand because hora could be a really good companion for teachers and students when the pandemic is over as well.
